grinding is really bad - and runs in the family big time.
People who have sleep bruxism can also suffer headaches, earaches, jaw pain, jaw joint disorders and damaged teeth. Sleep bruxism may also be linked with other medical conditions and have an impact on quality of life
check, check and check.

Awww. What causes it in the first place - is it a nervous thing?

anxiety will make it worse, but does not cause it. it runs in families, but they're not sure what the underlying cause is.

I once spoke to someone who said that he ground his teeth, although I never noticed him doing it - but wouldn't, if he only did it in his sleep. Does this happen, or do people do it consciously during the daytime?

I can't imagine anyone doing it consciously, unless under horrendous stress. no, actually, not even then.

Sorry - I put that wrongly. I meant do people do it during the daytime while they're walking around or whatever, or is it something which people do in their sleep or when they're nodding off?

first installment of my numerous to be dental appointments - done.

it was so bizarre to have a silent appointment. totally, except for the on again off again slurping and drilling and swoosh of the air - silencio. i'm used to an assistant, other people in nearby cubicles, phones ringing....

it was great!

he'd say something like "we'll wait one minute." and then he'd get back to it.

different.

pumpkin: "is your face still frozen?"

me: "yes."

pumpkin: " are you going to eat now, or wait till your face melts?"

no word of a lie: painless!

totally. the rootcanal replacement was done in 25 mins. I expected some horrendous ache and that creepy post-frozen feeling from my ear to my nose and got....
