Re: Reeading on Easter Morning

Motorola's first big factory was built inside the city limits of Chicago. That's the place that hired me. Their specialty was police communications radios, but during my tour of duty there they also made other things, such as CCTV's and hospital equipment such as the pagers patients use to call a nu...

Re: User Friendly

Data transfer over USB is a lot faster than over WiFi. That would seem to be the preferred method. The printer I have can be used from anyplace on earth that has an Internet connection. That's actually a special web service offered by HP, but it's totally unnecessary these days. There is an HP app f...

Re: Reeading on Easter Morning

Perhaps if I did a little research the facade of my aunt's house in that picture could be explained. Those two buildings in the background did not exist the last time I was at that house. In their place was a factory, the Holsum Bread Company. Their loading docs backed up to my aunt's back yard via ...

Re: User Friendly

When we first purchased my wife's iPad tablet computer, it was exclusively Apple oriented. We could not print anything from the tablet and did the e-mail trick you describe when it was necessary. Somewhere during the last 5 years worth of updates, Apple can now access the HP printer in my laboratory...

Re: Reeading on Easter Morning

I am duly impressed with your narrative about Meacham Park. Apparently what they did with the sewers was not unusual but I didn't expect to hear about it being done anywhere else outside of Chicago. The area my aunts lived in was called Bridgeport. That is the neighborhood of Chicago that is near th...

Re: User Friendly

I don't know what you are doing there, but the problem of rebooting to get the mouse/keyboard working is familiar. I learned of this when I tried to re-install Windows 7 one time. It took several reboots to get the installer CD to work and even then it got flaky and I had to use the tab and space ba...

Re: Reeading on Easter Morning

I had an aunt that lived in one of the oldest parts of Chicago. Two aunts in fact, but this one aunt Rose lived on a street that had an interesting history to it. All the two story residences were originally built on flat land without a traditional basement. The story goes that there were sewers in ...

Re: User Friendly

Your Ace Hardware story brings to mind the super power I apparently have to shut down at least one computer at Schnucks. Been here about 4.5 years now and have seen one major overhaul of the checkout system at Schnucks. As far as me the customer is concerned only one improvement was made. I now do n...

Re: User Friendly

You are probably correct about sticking with a single product and learning about it. That is pretty much the reason why Windows "just works" for me. It's not that Windows has fewer problems than Linux, but I am familiar with how to go about troubleshooting because that's all I did during m...

Re: Reeading on Easter Morning

I guess in my past I've heard about the use of corn cobs in the outhouse. It's difficult to imagine using such a thing, but apparently the cobs were pretty effective. Newsprint sounds better, but I bet the cobs did a better job of cleaning. All I can say is that I'm grateful for indoor plumbing and ...

Re: Reeading on Easter Morning

About the worst reaction I experienced from blood thinners was massive bruising on my thighs. Apparently that was caused by an antibiotic I was taking at the time. The dose I'm taking is about the least you can get so that if I do have problems it might involve taking fewer pills. So far so good. Th...

Re: Friendly Neighbor

We've waited and waited for Illinois to build a monument of a guy playing croquet, aiming toward the arch, hi hi. What a brilliant idea! LOL The blurb I read mentioned the STL arch was indeed the tallest arch structure. There are non-arch monuments that exceed that height. I never would have though...

Re: Friendly Neighbor

They don't make arches as tall as the Gateway Arch which happens to peak at 630 feet. I've been up the Hancock Tower which is (I had to look this up) 1128 feet tall not counting the antennae which make the tip of those 1499 feet off the ground. I see that they now are charging a fee to get in the Ha...

Re: Reeading on Easter Morning

The sandwich spread I have managed to find would never be more than a diversion once in a great while. Even if the old time Oscar Meyer spread were still around I would only use it as a treat. I believe the old spread was made from braunschweiger, or a diluted version of it. Braunschweiger is plenti...

Re: Reeading on Easter Morning

It's remarkable the things I learn from you. LOL Way back when I lived in Chicago and mom packed me a lunch to take to school, one of my favorite sandwiches was made of that Kraft sandwich spread (or some similar brand which I believe was Oscar Meyer). There were times when I would just scoop some u...

Re: Friendly Neighbor

I don't have any feel for the dimensions of the Gateway Arch. It never occurred to me that the elevator up would tilt to follow the curvature. I would not have an issue with the closed quarters, but my wife and her vertigo probably would make it a terrifying ride for her. I've been atop of a few sky...

Re: Friendly Neighbor

I think you have the right idea when it comes to finances. When I retired a new household rule was put into effect. No outstanding credit is allowed for more than 30 days. We paid off the house, the cars, the credit cards, and have been paying cash for everything ever since. Odd as it seems, we prob...
