the canal that takes you from the mediterranean to the atlantic - and back again. it's a huge deal around here, although not much use for else than duckies and tourists any more

Sooo ... exactly what am I looking at? I checked out the seaway map connecting the Mediterranean and the Atlantic (you know, where Gibraltar is located) and it's a few miles wider than the canal picture you have here.

Well, see there, I learned something new. I had no idea France built their own version of the Panama Canal. That's an amazing feat when you think about it. Then again, it looks beautiful, but I have to wonder why they did it. Did they have some kind of grudge about Spain and want nothing to do with them? Or what?
