just cloud

Post by pilvikki »

i'm not renewing my account, which was on the cheap side, but now has jumped to $250, which is way beyond. so, i wrote to them to cancel and this is the latest reply from them:
Hi Pilvikki,

Thank you for your email.

I would like to inform your user name is the email address itself 'pilvikki@gmail.com'.

Before we proceed to cancel your account, we would like you to know that you already backup 93.66 GB. Once you cancelled your account, these files will be deleted and you will no longer have an access to these files anymore.

We do advise you to complete a full restore of all of your 93.66 GB (233,330 Files, 171 Folders) files before cancelling. Please let us know once this has been completed so we can fully cancel your account.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can help with.

Kind regards,
Daniel Jackson
Customer Service Representative,
Just Cloud
now, i'm confused: why would i do a full restore? some of those files are the old files as i've not bothered with them since last year...

what do you think?

You got to ask yourself why you have 93+ GB up on somebody's cloud in the first place. Would it be a waste of time to download it all and save it to some other media? The justifications you come up with are the reasons why you would bother to do it. If you can't come up with any reasons to save those files elsewhere ... let them delete the account wholesale. You would have to give them written authorization to do so most likely, but if you don't need the files don't "restore" them.

There are such things as USB solid state drives. It's just a little box you can plug into any ol' USB port on your computer, which in turn you can use as storage space. They are pretty cheap and would be a great place to put 93GB of files you may never use, but don't want to toss out. Once you download everything to the drive, just unplug it and keep it in a drawer somewhere. That actually would be a lot safer (not to mention cheaper) than cloud storage. Your files will never get stolen or hacked or read by anybody other than you if you keep them in your desk drawer.

the cloud thing seemed a good idea at the time, considering my last back up, in the drawer, went up in smoke along with the 'puter.

i do have 3 of them wee boxes, just cant figure them out, being in french and all that. really, i only want my pictures - all 6000 + of them - and the document files saved, in case loki tanks. the op system etc are on discs somewhere around here...

so, i guess i'll need to try to figure out what i'm doing with the "passports"...

The little black boxes of (USB) memory generally have but one way to plug them into the computer. Your only challenge would be to find the right socket on the computer in which to put it. Once it is plugged in, Loki will think it's just another hard drive (over there in My Computer). At that point it's simply a matter of copying the cloud onto that little black box. It looks like they know how to speak/write English. There must be a help desk or customer support phone number with which you can talk to a live person to walk you through the copying process.

I know what you mean about the fear of losing it all. That is exactly why people use the cloud. Your backups are on somebody else's computer. If that is your worry, then simply make two copies. Give one to a friend or relative at some other location. Cloud storage is indeed convenient and relatively safe, but it can be expensive.

oh dennis, i'm SUCH an idiot!

i'd dug out my back up passports. i plugged them in - nothing happened.

i went on line, spent half the day trying to figure out what i'd done now... could make no sense of any of it at all. thought i'd update some stuff, forgot 8.1 wiped out my p/w's. so no go there.

finally gave up, but then noticed that hey... what's this WD thingy... on my desk top?

yep, click on that and done! put the documents on one, pictures on the Ultra, where i still have room for another 6781 images.

:thumbu: I am ecstatic that you were able to back up your files/pics. It's pretty hard to tell from your description what you did, but whatever it is I"m glad you did it. lol

When you plug one of those memory sticks into your computer, you might see an icon on your desktop, but more likely you will get a message asking you what you want to do with this thing you just plugged in. Your answer generally would be to simply look at the files. At that point it should show up as a 'Device and drives' on your "This PC" icon. Moving files around from there is a piece of cake.

I don't know what 'Just Cloud' does for you, but it's possible that it automatically puts an icon on your desktop. A password may or may not be necessary depending on how it was set up.

Apparently you intuitively figured it all out. Soooo ... any new pictures or files would now go onto that memory stick(s) in addition to wherever else you put them on your computer. It's a hassle saving them to two different places, but it's well worth the effort should Loki ever fall and not be able to get up.

and i thought i'm an idiot...!

i was not thrilled with JC to begin with, n/m the $250 yearly charge for crappy service! and this is what i got just now:
Hi ,

Thank you for your email.

I can confirm that the auto-renew has been disabled on your account. Please be aware that your Subscriptions will not automatically renew. We will issue invoices for renewals 15 days before the due date, and any outstanding invoices will now have to be paid manually by the due date to avoid any disruption to your account.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

who got the idea that i wanted to stop account deletion? i've dealt with 3-4 different people who obviously don't talk to each other. in the same language anyway. and... what is he talking about? outstanding invoices? i cancelled a month before renewal date, got a strange request for my user name, which turned out to be my email address, the one i emailed from...

strange people. bye-bye.

You are communication with a robot computer. I seriously doubt that a real human being had anything to do with that particular e-mail. It's a form letter with a standard script which may or may not apply to your particular circumstance. What you can do, if you choose to do so, is send a snail mail letter (certified if possible) explaining how you canceled your account and when you did it. Further emphasize that you will not be liable for any payments due after your request for termination of the account. I'm pretty sure that will get the attention of a real human being. You may not want to pursue this any more than you have already, but the letter will protect you if they decide you owe them money.

Good luck, and

they would have a hard time collecting as my visa card has been changed a couple of times since they last billed me. and, incidentally, i was notified of a failure to process a payment after i'd cancelled their fine service.

yeah, now that i look at the letter, it's an obvious form letter. bad form, too.

As long as you were able to retrieve your files and photos you will be ok. From the looks of things they must have had several people complain to them in the past. I doubt they would come after you. I see the lag and inappropriate form letters all the time. It makes me wonder why they use a computer if it isn't programmed better than it is. They certainly aren't winning over clients with their outstanding customer service.

Your Account Is Now Overdue

Hi Pilvikki,

I am concerned that your JustCloud account is now overdue, and we have not managed to charge your card on file, so all of your files, photos, movies, songs and documents are at risk again from viruses, hard drive failure and accidental deletion.

Once your account is suspended your files will be deleted and no further backups will run, putting your important files at risk of being lost forever.

Your important files really could be lost forever! Please use the link below to keep them backed up:

http://mail.justcloud.com/mAstakbB

Remember it takes just one random hard drive crash or one forgetful moment to lose all of your computer files forever.

Here's the link again Pilvikki: http://mail.justcloud.com/mAstakbB

I would be happy to discuss this with you further and the options available to you, feel free to reply to this email or give us a call anytime:
