The classic version of Volare cannot be surpassed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejzDJkUXgdw
and
There is something very moving about the Ritchie Valens version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSKJQ18ZoIA

Like the version of Celebration that I cited, the originals seem so to be classic for a reason.

I detect a hint of Elvis in that performance.

That was the birth of an era, and I was there to witness it live.

As far as music goes, Elvis is who I recall most vividly. He was a break with the traditional music of the day and heaven forbid he would shake his hips while singing. The big event was his first appearance on television, meaning he finally hit the big time. He shook the audience and his hips on the Ed Sullivan Show, something I can almost recall vividly. I wasn't so impressed with his pelvic movements, but I was amazed that such a thing would bring out such heavy criticism. Seeing him for the first time performing live was anticlimactic.

I didn't know that "Celebration" version... Not that it is wrong, just a bit weird, with those lyrics and the english speaking accent...

About "Volare", I remember most the original version by Domenico Modugno, but the Dean Martin version is also very good...

And, about "La Bamba", I've posted an amalgmation version before here, yet the version sticking to the original son jarocho is the basis of it all.

I was very impressed with the orchestra in that video. Your memory is better than mine.
I may have known at the time who did the original, but Dean Martin was the most popular singer of that song here in America.

We've spoken about "La Bamba" in another thread, every time I hear any version of it I remember myself taking a milk coffee sitting just outside of "La Parroquia" coffee shop in Veracruz Promenade looking at the Port while workers load new cars into Cargo Ships in the port over there... (Sorry, no photos from myself).
