All dogs have a built in sixth sense, but their hearing and sense of smell's also more tuned than ours, so they know if someone's snooping about outside.

Smaller dogs DO tend to snap - and yap. I like to hear a nice deep bark which denotes a good, solid, fair-sized animal.
