Organoids

Organoids are, well, small organs. They are laboratory tools used to study the development and function of certain organs, such as brains. Apparently scientists have created organoid brains about the size of a pea and are conducting some very basic research into neurological disorders with them. The latest discovery is that when allowed to grow long enough these organoids will start to develop complex brain cells and emit brain waves. That can go up to the point of an organoid having the same brain capacity as a premature baby. Some scientists are trying to determine if these organoids can demonstrate consciousness, and it looks as if they might be able to. Certain moral an ethical issues arise when you grow something like that in the lab, and apparently we are at that point now. Amazing, to say the least.
