interestingly enough i tried some more expensive brands just for comparison - and decided to stick with the cheap stuff. they appear more mellow, which is something i expect the experts shun?

I have no clue what the experts look for, but I would guess that it's something different in each type of wine. The dry reds don't have the same quality as the sweet whites. Since I don't know what goes into a quality wine, none of the sophistication of wine tasters means anything to me. I'm going to do what you do and drink what tastes best to me. If I were going to drink wine at all, that is.
