the afterglow of marie curie

Post by pilvikki »

i don't remember if i posted this previously, just (re)discovered it myself:

https://www.csmonitor.com/Technology/Ho ... adioactive

it is really bizarre to think that she, her family, papers etc will glow for another 1600+ years... she and pierre were moved into 1" lead lined coffins and taken to the parthenon from where they originally had been interned.

That's why a nuclear war is insane. It's not over when the dust settles. The half life of plutonium, a favorite ingredient of nuclear bombs, is anywhere from 17, 000 to 373,00 years depending on the grade. Uranium 238 (weapons grade) has a half life of 4.5 billion years. Think about that. 4.5 BILLION years. Keep in mind that 'half life' is the time required for these elements to reach half their original potency. It goes on from there.

Very Interesting!
Loved how she like to see the eerie glow in her laboratory.
