ditto in the country in canada. i was once looking for a place way the hell up a steep hill and was praying we'd get up there despite the icy patches. the car was old and i goosed it to make sure it didn't start balking the sharp ascend. made it! phew!

we crest the hill ............and :yikes: i'm staring down a skating rink of shear ice! the bit of salt they'd thrown down had gotten nice and warm in the sun and sunk out of site. it looked just like that video.

i still can't believe i managed to keep it together!

Living in the city (suburbs) as I did, we never experienced streets of solid ice. However, My father-in-law was an ice fishing fan. Driving the car out on to a frozen lake was no big deal. I was assured not to worry when the ice made noises from all the weight of the cars on it.

well, on one hand the farmers aren't happy, but on the other, people take to the ice as shortcuts:

That is truly amazing. I never realized how much of the country is covered in water. Looks like it could be mosquito heaven in the summer time

oh you want to believe it! and up in lapland you're covered in blackflies as well. literally. one of the odd jobs father was doing after the war was to paint some of the bridges the germans graciously left standing (read = couldn't get to them) the blackflies instantly coated the paint, so they had to abandon that project until later in the summer.

I wonder what the evolutionary purpose of black flies would be

unlike mossies that breed in still water, flackflies breed in running water, so i guess that covers the feeding of various types of fish/birds?

what i REALLY want to know is why we have horse and deer flies? haven't gotten snacked much by horse flies, but jaysus, do i ever react to the stripy wee bastards!

I have this theory that insects own this place. We came after them and they are just tolerating us.

so, we're here to feed them... seems legit.

In many cases we are their food. They also trained us to grow food for them. We call that agriculture.
