Actually, being buried seated has a long history among certain peoples.
Early Christian Bishops, were buried in a seated position, often in the Bishops chair from their church.
Also, the Balunga clan of the Bukusu Tribe buried their leaders in a seated position.
Also, and this is different. The Ifugao people of the Philippines placed some of their dead in a seated position, but they did not bury them, they were seated outside in a special area and left exposed to the elements.

While I was working for a publisher doing rewrites and simple edits, some of the little niche books I worked on was about various tribal traditions around the world.
I remembered a little of that, but looked up the name of the tribe in the Philippines on-line before posting, just as a double check.
Even in the Americas, most Indian burials were above ground, often on raised platforms. Saw these in person when I was in Taos, New Mexico. Some were buried, like over in Cahokia Mounds, Illinois.
