You would do well in interviews as you are intelligent and no nonsense, experienced, colossal, good natured and good humoured....
I get nervous and dislike being the centre of attention..

You might be surprised at how little it means that you have experience or how well you can do a specific job. Many positions are filled by people because of the thought process they use to solve problems and how well they get along with fellow employees. While it's not ethical or legal in some places, even your activity on the Internet social media is being reviewed in many cases. It's not as simple as it used to be. But then, nothing is.

Hiring an employee is very much an investment. The employer simply wants to maximize the return on it's investment and thus does a lot of research before it makes a decision. In many instances there are legal issues, such as discrimination, that need to be considered as well. Nothing is simple anymore.

I think it does work both ways. If you apply for a job you should research the company before you go for an interview to be certain you want to work for such a place.
