:shamrock: This is my first year in O'Fallon, a very Irish kind of town. It will be interesting to see how the natives celebrate their day. Wife and I will probably go out to dinner for corned beef and cabbage. They have actual Irish Pubs. If the weather warms up we may shop for some spring flowers as well. Otherwise no plans are on the agenda. :shamrock:

I sympathize with your lament. I don't see how people in Scandinavian countries can go months without seeing sunshine.

well, i was surprised to find that the sun setting around 1-2-3, depending on where you were, was not as horrid as i thought. for one, there's a really long twilight, the longer the further north you go. with the snow means it doesn't get pitch black, more of a blue. without the snow you're kinda buggered...

ooh, would you look at that! bing has a size sorter that gives you pictures in the size you request, instead of google a) NOT having a small size and b) not giving a rat's what you asked for anyway.

The beauty of it all is breathtaking. Unfortunately, I can't see the requirement to live near the Arctic Circle in order to appreciate it.

true enough... -30° C is not unusual. -40 not so often...

the coldest it got at my house in canada was -37. you'd breath through your scarf, which then got soggy from the frost building up on it. your eyelashes got frost on them and so did any exposed hair.

the house corners would emit loud bangs like rifleshots and trees would explode in the forest.

much fun.

At -40C the thermometer reads exactly the same number in Fahrenheit. I knew about all those extreme cold weather phenomena, but never heard of trees exploding due to the cold. We had a willow tree that exploded once during a thunderstorm. Shrapnel from the explosion was found 200 feet away in every direction.

So, when you lived in twilight for part of the year, did the moon disappear along with the sun?
