Back home, even though we had city water, we also had ponds used for watering crops, which refilled from run-off from the greenhouse roofs after a rain. We also had a tall water tower on our property from before we had city water. It never was abandoned, but was now filled partly from city water, to take advantage of the chlorine, and partly from filtered well water.
My cousin used to watch our city water usage, and if we were close to the cubic feet usage which would give us a discount for the month, he would top off the water tower to run us up to the discounted water bill. Then the following month, we would work primarily from the water tower and use very little city water during the month.
We saved a considerable amount of money by his monitoring our water usage, and making sure we went over the amount needed for the discount on months when we were close to the dividing line.

You would be surprised at all the different types of mechanical equipment we had on our farms that was replaced with either electric or gasoline motors in later years. Like the pump to fill water tower before we had city water. It ran on neither electric or fuel, had no motor per se. It created it's own power from the water running past it, or through it actually. Water Rams used the KICK of flowing water when you stopped it suddenly. Like the hammer you get in water pipes that don't have an air cushion chamber as a buffer when a faucet is closed suddenly, or today solenoids when they close instantly. Bang goes the water pipes if you don't have the air column.
