Riding Out a Tornado

Post by yogi »

We all know how those mobile homes are tornado magnets, right? Recently a category F4 tornado lifted one from it's foundation in Colorado. It carried the home 130 miles into Kansas where it landed on top of an automobile. The family of four living inside survived unharmed after a 4 hour ride from hell.

Wow, now that is just amazing!
Surprised they didn't suffocate from the high vacuum inside a tornado.
Maybe it just carried it on the outer part, but even so, that would have been one heck of a ride.
Over four hours sounds almost unbelievable for it to be held aloft for so long.

I'm surprised to learn that a funnel cloud can stay in tact for that long. I'm also guessing that they were not actually inside the funnel but sitting on top of it. Perhaps the air pressure there is closer to normal. But four hours!!!??? It truly is unbelievable.

It would almost have to have lasted that long to traverse the distance they traveled.
The lower spout could have gone up and down several times, skipping over things on the ground.
We saw that a lot with dirt devils. The actual whirlwind didn't stop, but the spouts would come and go.
