It's a problem for me to become aware of what is out there in Linux-land. Apparently I've not been looking in the right places. There is a web site < https://distrotest.net/ > that allows you to stream any of the more than 200 versions of Linux OS's they have on their server. This isn't light weight either. You can do whatever it is you normally do in Linux, including partitioning the disk, install software, and changing config files. No .iso is involved and there is no DVD or USB memory to burn. Just call up the distro you want to see, and voila. It's there.

One of the people I follow on Twitter did a review of that Linux site. Apparently they have been around for a while but never got much visibility. After the review their servers crashed due to the huge influx of inquiries. I tried to fire it up yesterday and they gave me a number. I didn't want to wait in line for my number to come up so that I still don't know how well the site works. But the reviews are promising.

My daughter flew up from Florida on Wednesday and stayed until this morning. It was an interesting couple of days doing things with the kids again. As a special gift for Fathers Day, she FedEx-ed lox and bagels in from a deli in NYC. I have to admit they were amazing in spite of the lox being smoked and packaged as opposed to fresh. They were Nova Scotia lox which are the best. Today, the actual Fathers Day, I will be relaxing and not doing much else. My favorite pastime.

I got the same thing when I tried to use the site, but no wait in line number just a Busy Try Again Later notice.
Whoever came up with that idea, I think it is wonderful.
On an older computer with only 512 megs of ram, I tried several of the smaller Distro's, and on that computer, the one that worked the best (of those I tried) was Puppy Linux. I already had Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint on it, and compared to those on that old machine, it really ran fast. But then the only thing I used that computer for, besides accounting at one time, was doing a little writing. Come to think of it, the very first Linux program I installed in that machine was Knoppix.
I've always kept a Knoppix disk handy when I first started working with Linux, but I don't remember why now. Probably to get in after I broke something.
On another old machine with 1 gig of memory, I installed CentOS, but never really liked the RedHat way of doing things. But I'm also going back many years here too. I actually got started with RedHat when it was free, hi hi. But there were virtually no programs back then either, which is why I went back to Windows for so many years.
