Re: Smug As A Bug

*takes a bow* Thank you for your accolades. I did indeed accomplish a long standing goal. However, I did nothing that is beyond the normal capabilities of Windows, Linux, or UEFI. The standards are pretty clear about what they can do. The so called "experts" are proficient in what they do,...

Re: Avatar Issues

You are correct to say Windows is run as administrator. However, in spite of what you and Microsoft insist, there are several places that need confirmation from the administrator to perform a given action. Looking at the system's logs, for example, it takes an OK from the user after being warned tha...

Smug As A Bug

Today was a test of how well I learned things. The final stage in this project is to put the ASUS tower software back together as it was before UEFI became a concern of mine. If you have been following the saga from the start, you will recall that I began this adventure with a system configured for ...

Re: Windows Moving To A Linuix Kernel

I think you did a marvelous thing by using people who are physically challenged to work for you. We had a very diverse workforce at Motorola but not too many that were visibly disabled. I know of a few who came but didn't stay long. Apparently they could do the work but the fast pace and all the abl...

Re: Peppermint Linux

I'm reasonably certain you can find old Linux kernels. Finding the hardware that recognizes and uses it properly would be the trick. At one time I probably knew what all those numbers meant but have no clue as I look at them today. I know you told me about CD's that lose their ability to store data....

Re: Installing Ubuntu

I'd make a wild guess and say those small expansion slots are the PCIE bus. They seem to come in various sizes (lanes) with the smallest resembling an RS232 connector. The PCIE replaces the PCI of olden times which is what I suspect you are finding in your collection. To be honest I don't understand...

Re: Avatar Issues

Well, neither Windows nor NTFS storage systems have the types of permission levels you find on Linux files. I realize you are not as familiar with Windows as you are with Linux, but that statement is not totally accurate. All the permissions and group assignments you see in Linux are under the Prop...

Re: Installing Ubuntu

I spent a lot of time pondering the decision to build my own computer. I dealt with computers ever since they were made available to the public and working for Motorola gave me some inside information about processors. Everything I needed to know was in my head, not to mention all the years troubles...

Re: Peppermint Linux

I have system images of my original Windows 98 computer and a Vista image for the computer after that. And, I still am using the Windows 7 image to write this message to you. I made the mistake of disposing of the hardware for those older images. If I kept it I could still run Windows 98 t...

Re: Windows Moving To A Linuix Kernel

It's a wonderful thing for people who are not sighted to be able to work and be productive. You got to wonder, however, if they are being taken advantage of. I know the work is trivial, but boring and repetitious jobs for meager wagers sounds like a captured market, i.e., slave labor. Of course the ...

Re: Avatar Issues

There are a lot of folks worried about messing with organisms and genes. Most of those people are not biologists and have a poor to no understanding of what is going on. There is nothing we can do to alter the genetics that can't be done by random mutations. The only difference is the source of the ...

Re: Windows Moving To A Linuix Kernel

You know too much about altering money. LOL Please don't tell me anymore. I don't have time to testify. I attended the University of Illinois for a short time when it was located on Chicago's Navy Pier. At the entry to the pier there was a newsstand that also sold candies and a few other snack...

Re: Peppermint Linux

I'm pretty sure you would have trouble with controller cards for those 5 1/4" drives. I'd guess they were all in an 8 bit computer system and would be impossible to kludge into anything existing in 2020. There might be a converter out there, somewhere, but then when you overcome the hardware pr...

Re: Installing Ubuntu

I learned a few things when I build this ASUS tower. One of those things was the fact that there are several bus lines on a motherboard which carry data of one sort or another. Most of the time you can't do much about bus speed, but when it comes to those which interact with the CPU directly there a...

Re: Avatar Issues

The benefits of recycling must outweigh the faults to make it profitable. And, you know those recycling centers would not exist if they were not profitable. I suppose that's why oil refineries exist as well. Those babies are not cheap to construct. The biological separation method rang a bell in my ...

Re: Installing Ubuntu

I have to admit that I was thinking the same thing: wouldn't it be nice if we lived close to each other? I might not be able to do too much for you, but my time would be non-billable. I think you have equipment that is dated even before my time. I have been using computers since they were invented, ...

Re: Peppermint Linux

I now have a collection of ATA drives that were made for laptops. That never stopped me from putting them into the desktop tower where they served me well. I suppose I could dispense with all of them and not miss any data. All I want from those drives is already backed up in a couple different place...

Re: Windows Moving To A Linuix Kernel

There are a ton of ways to verify a bill is genuine. All I know is about the watermark and the fibers in the paper. Apparently the paper they use to print real money is highly secured and not available in the wilds. It seems hardly worth the effort to counterfeit money these days when it's so easy t...

Re: Avatar Issues

Apparently you can levitate metals to separate them from the plastics and paper. Magnets extract the ferrous metals, but there are a few ways to separate the rest: One method separates metal by its melting point. Then, there are bugs, insects, that are attracted to certain metals and eat them. The b...
