Re: It's 104℉ Right Now
Charging what the market will bear seems reasonable. The idea under capitalism is to maximize profits which is why companies such as Apple can get away with the high prices they charge for most of their products. People will pay for the name. In more competitive businesses, such as restaurants, I wo...

Re: 46,000 year old worm
I had acid reflux problems for over a year and had no clue what was going on. Never really had acid backup in my throat but I knew the stomach was revolting over something. The damage to the esophagus built up gradually. At first just sucking on a peppermint candy would soothe things over, but event...

Re: 46,000 year old worm
The giant shopping mall up north had a few of those trolley-mobiles. My son-in-law drove one for a while but the pay wasn't enough. The route also was very short and limited to the village in which the mall was located. In other words it was cute but pretty much useless. I think the intent was to ca...

Re: It's 104℉ Right Now
I don't know how businesses determine their need for profit on any given product. All I recall is you telling me it's 100% markup by the retailer. It could be !000% or 1%. Never had to run a business and figure that out. I do know that if I did run a business my profit would be calculated and not se...

Re: Joke of the Day
I think Burbank is considered the best, but some variation of that is what I read about and tried to order. The name was a derivative of Idaho but I'll be darned if I can recall exactly what it was. Some restaurant in NYC was famous for its fries which used these special potatoes, and I'm guessing t...

Re: Joke of the Day
I don't recall the name of the variety of Idaho potato that I referred to above. They were special and typically used by gourmet style cooks. I'm thinking there was only one farm that grew those babies, but I could be wrong about that. It also seemed odd to me that they only sold by the 100 pound ba...

Re: It's 104℉ Right Now
Going by what you told me about how businesses operate, my $6,600 hearing aids cost the audiologist half that. Since I have supplemental insurance, they took off $1000 from the price. I don't understand why the insurance matters because I am the one paying for the hearing aids. The insurance, howeve...

Re: 46,000 year old worm
I've only seen photographs of some of those strange vehicles you see at car shows. I believe I've seen the outhouse one more than once in fact. Around here they have a lot of old cars that seem to be of show quality, but I ever actually went to one of those events. I didn't think show cars were actu...

Re: 46,000 year old worm
The story of your neighbor's ingenuity with his smashed pick up truck is amusing. I'm thinking of those Internet memes I see regarding redneck solutions to problems. I'd say your neighbor qualifies to be one of those memes. LOL We have sewers under our streets and they do one heck of a job clearing ...

Re: It's 104℉ Right Now
Walgreens sells affordable hearing aids, but the sad truth is that you get what you pay for. Those drug store models are merely amplifiers which is all many people need. My particular hearing loss justifies a higher performance device. The audiologists didn't provide a lot of technical details but k...

Re: Joke of the Day
The Poor Boy's I am lamenting are $8, but I'd guess at least 8 inches in length. The meats were good, albeit not great, but the condiments that came with the home made bread is what made the sandwich special. I believe they made their own mayo, which was a big favorite of mine. I never knew there we...

Re: Joke of the Day
Never tried to run a serious business so that I don't know all the intricacies involved. I can only see things from the consumer side of the counter. That small butcher shop might have had a legitimate reason to stop making Poor Boys and thus tried to cut his losses. My thinking was, and still is, t...

Re: It's 104℉ Right Now
Apparently you can have both Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare would be the primary insurer and Medicaid the secondary. If your income is less than $20,100 (for one person) then you might qualify for Medicare. I'm reading that Medicaid would pay whatever Medicare does not. Don't know if it would be wo...

Re: 46,000 year old worm
I heard about a lot of tree damage due to that storm but oddly no flooding reports. My weather station claims it only rained .6 inches which usually is not enough to cause problems. I visited the insurance lady this morning since I was in the neighborhood of her office. Never met her or been to her ...

Re: 46,000 year old worm
That storm you experienced at 7 PM came rolling through O'Fallon around 3 PM. It didn't look too unusual on the weather map but they clocked some wind gusts at 70 mph. I was watching it all out my front window and it was beginning to get scary. The trees in front were bent at nearly 90 degrees and I...

Re: It's 104℉ Right Now
Not that Medicare is simple, but Medicaid is a bag of worms. Every state has their own version with some being better than others. I too am fairly uninformed, but my understanding is that if your income is at or below the poverty level, you are eligible for Medicaid. I suppose that applies to income...

Re: Joke of the Day
The Illinois lottery tickets were sold the same way as you describe for Tennessee. There might be places in Missouri which also do over the counter sales, but I never go shopping in those stores. I got to wonder how much cashier time and expense it actually costs the store to sell lottery tickets. I...

Re: Joke of the Day
We have vending machines that dispense all the lotto tickets Missouri has to offer. The number draw tickets also can be purchased from the customer service desk which has it's own machine to print out the tickets. All the scratch cards, however, must be had via the vending machines. Those scratch ca...

Re: It's 104℉ Right Now
Our Medicare is on plan F if I recall correctly. It's a legacy plan and no longer offered to new patients. All I know is that it pays for everything that Medicare does not, assuming Medicare pays in the first place. This is the insurance that costs us about $1000 a month in our ripe old age. The day...
