Re: Adobe Time Bomb

I don't like being talked down to, nor do I appreciate a snow job. The reason service people tend to do that is because most of their clients are ... uninformed. When I did desktop support at Motorola I went out of my way to explain things to people in a way they would understand. To be honest I was...

Re: Ulyana

Rave review? Nahhh. LOL I will give credit where credit is due, however. I do believe this is the best version of Linux Mint I've ever run across. My interest in Linux has grown from an intellectual curiosity to investigating its potential to become my default operating system and thus replace Windo...

Re: Personal Safety From Google

Apparently you are moving in the right direction. Ancestry.com would seem like an appropriate medium for your family tree. It's a shame they are polluted as a source of information but you have done your part and that's all your family would be interested in anyway. Your diaries and photos would not...

Ulyana

As promised, I downloaded the latest and greatest from Linux Mint. The version number is 20 and named Ulyana. I don't know why they have to name an operating system after a human being, nor why it's always a female name, but they do. It's cute and I bet the guy in charge of coming up with code names...

Re: Adobe Time Bomb

Sometimes I don't know if I should feel proud or pissed. All too often I'll meet a younger person (there aren't too many older than me these days) who is astounded that I even know what a computer is. Then to learn I have a TikTok account, can write my own Tweets, play Witcher 3, and run my own webs...

Re: Personal Safety From Google

I think you might be a victim of not being able to see the forest through all those trees. LOL It amounts to that old psychological paradigm which classifies people into two categories: left brain and right brain. The lefties are practical application experts while the righties are the theoreticians...

Re: Kudos From Linus Torvalds

I've abandoned all antivirus software except the one that Microsoft forces upon Windows 10 users. You can't delete it and it can only be disabled temporarily. I understand why they do that and given their former reputation for being a virus magnet it makes sense for Microsoft to secure it's main ope...

Re: Adobe Time Bomb

Woo hoo ... I just read where Ulyana (Linux Mint 20) has been released. I did not want to download the beta but now the stable release is available. I'm going to download it today and fire up my VirtualBox to put yet another Linux on a Stick. Stay tuned for details. Now, back to our regularly...

Re: Personal Safety From Google

You would indeed be a lost cause if you just threw up your hands and give up. But, that's not what you typically do. I see you trying until you get it right or understand why you can't do it. That's not giving up, my friend. SQL is probably the first thing you should understand before you progress o...

Re: Adobe Time Bomb

I'm not inclined to debate semantics. As you are hinting in your above response, it's all relative. There are working definitions for all technical terms because one must be very precise and accurate when dealing with technical matters. Unfortunately, many of those technical matters leach out into t...

Re: Kudos From Linus Torvalds

Yet they never lose a players game data, even when they have a major server crash. Probably because the data is stored on the client's computer and not the server. Also, there is more than one type of server involved with places like Steam, for example. The game itself and a few other critical bits...

Re: Personal Safety From Google

Just to add a small bit of detail and expansion to my previous dissertation ... HTML = Hypertext Markup Language That term "Markup" is the main reason I know HTML isn't a programming language. The folks who invented HTML say so in the name of their product. So, you might wonder, what the h...

Re: Personal Safety From Google

I'm getting a better picture of why you don't "get" things like Bash, but a true understanding might require some therapy sessions. I'm not equipped to help you there. :lmao1: But, true to form, none of the above is enough to stop me from trying to explain. Putting aside for the moment our...

Re: Kudos From Linus Torvalds

There is evidence that any computer and its network can be compromised. I've read stories about the Pentagon and military bases being hacked. Just about every government agency that has not been eradicated yet has been hacked. The IRS was hacked. That level of expertise is not found in a high school...

Let it be known and understood that what we discuss here is not a competition. In my humble opinion there are no winners or losers. We agree and disagree to roughly the same extent because our interests are similar but not identical. While the mission statement for this website was interred when the...

Re: Adobe Time Bomb

What I know from reading what the game providers are saying is HTML5 is ONLY a method of displaying content. Apparently I'm not the only one who realizes HTML (any version) is not a programming language. Think of HTML as being the Style function in your word processor. Your documents would be...

Re: Kudos From Linus Torvalds

You want to trust your personal and private data to an easily hacked available everywhere system? Well ... my personal and private medical records have been hacked, or at least the server on which they are stored (probably run on Linux) has been compromised. My financial institutions, both banking ...

Re: Personal Safety From Google

There is no doubt in my mind that this website is poison and feared more than the infamous virus floating around these days. I say that base on your multiple efforts to get people to participate in these forums, or even register for that matter. I have a few friends who registered here out of kindne...
