Re: The Entropy of USB Memory Sticks

The irony of it all is that a zero weighs more than a one. LOL I never thought about how much weight those free electrons would amass, but I do like the analogy to strawberries. They are healthier than M&Ms too.

Re: Avatar Issues

I don't know about the nebulizer, it's attachments, or the meds it dispenses; my mom had all that but it was provided by the hospice care people free. What happened in that case was mom left the hospital diagnosed as terminal. Thus each month $400+ was given to the hospice people by Medicare to prov...

The Entropy of USB Memory Sticks

The questions is: "Is a full USB stick heavier than an empty one?' We talked about the conservation of matter and energy in another thread. Amazingly enough it applies to traditional USB memory sticks as well. The article explains why a fully loaded stick weights (immeasurably) more than an emp...

They say fescue is the preferred grass in this area. Up north I would use those blends too and it all look decent in between the weeds. LOL For many years I've been letting my lawn grow beyond three inches tall. They claim that will keep the weeds down, but it's a lie. I get every weed on my Missour...

If we let them get by with this, next they will leave cartons of products in the aisles and expect you to restock the shelves for them too. Have you ever shopped at Aldi? That's almost what goes on over there. I know you think you are working for the shop if you bag your own groceries, but like the...

Re: We Are All Connected

All that makes sense. Apparently the CC companies are self-insured too. Every business has to expect some losses, but the opportunities seem greater for CC fraud than with most other companies. As I mentioned with comments about insurance companies, the losses for CC companies have to be covered by ...

Re: Avatar Issues

I don't know too many people who are comfortable with insurance of any kind unless they work for the company. Even then there is a lot of eyebrow raising. My wife's first job was as a claims adjuster for a major insurance company and she would see all kinds of peculiar claims; some more so than the ...

Re: We Are All Connected

I'm guessing all the major credit card companies have a fraud division. That's one place I'd expect artificial intelligence on their computers. It's pretty easy for them to figure out that if wife buys a plane ticket to Tampa and then next week a zillion charges from Florida show up. But how do they...

The absolute best self-checkout systems I've ever seen or used are at Home Depot. They look a lot like the ones in the grocery store with the exception that the GUI is a lot bigger. It makes it easier for old guys like me to read. But then, there isn't a lot to read as I must do with the other store...

Re: Installing Ubuntu - Part 2

I just bought some 15% acid content vinegar to do some heavy duty cleaning. The seller, however, was selling it as a herbicide. It's potent stuff and will kill anything it touches which surprises me. I didn't think that percent dilution would be so powerful. I guess it's better than using Roundup wh...

One of the most interesting ideas I've seen in restaurants is the Pay What You Want menu. It may not be the best in the house, but it's decent food and if you can't afford to pay at all, that's OK too. I read about a couple of those places and neither one is doing really well. Nonetheless, I like th...

Re: Installing Ubuntu - Part 2

I think Wang was one of the good guys, which explains why they couldn't beat the competition in the long run. People like IBM or Oracle have the best products you can buy, but they have the highest prices too. I don't think they really care about the small businessman either. They are after the big ...

The square you scan to do various things is called a QR Code. It's more than just a bar code reader in that it can hold executable code in it too. You can indeed use that to buy gas, but your payment method has to be linked to their system. Google, Apple, Microsoft, and a bunch of others too all hav...

I get more information off my credit card billing statement than I do out of my checking account. The same problem exists with credit cards as is presently in place with checks. There is no way for you or I to obtain physical evidence of a transaction being completed. We have to rely on third partie...

Re: Floating Anvil

One of the solutions to corruption in politics is precisely related to the point you make about campaign financing. The illegalities were all ironed out by the creation of PACs and by increasing the limits on corporate donations. It is possible now for a single entity to pour enough money into the e...

I've heard the same story from two interstate moving companies. They get a lot of business moving people out of Illinois, but rarely get any coming in. I can't say the entire state is corrupt, although your tax on rain story might show otherwise, but Chicago and it's 6 collar counties are among the ...

I'd be in a world of trouble if I had to come up with a canceled check to prove a purchase. I have bank statements going back ten years, but not physical checks. If I ever had to prove I purchased something, I don't recall doing it. You would think after all these years there would have been some qu...

I've taken apart a few laptops and was duly unimpressed with the WiFi hardware. It's basically a postage stamp sized circuit board that is screwed down someplace out of the way. A couple cables and a couple screws removes it all, and of course the reverse process can be used to put a new card in. Fr...

Re: Installing Ubuntu - Part 2

Sad to say, but both Apple and Wang focused on their customers' needs to the exclusion of expanding their markets, and both companies failed in that regard. There was no Bill Gates to save Wang's hide, and I don't think Wang management wanted to compromise their products anyway. The moral to the sto...
