Re: Paint Remover

I'm pretty well organized myself, but not to the same degree as you are. In my case it's a coverup for a flaw. I have a crummy memory for details. Most tasks I perform now are out of habit, but from time to time I have to relearn how to do something I did a long time ago. The fact that I have a syst...

Re: Rock And Roll

It was my understanding that the infrared part of sunlight gave you the heat and the UV part gave you the melanoma. Until I moved into the current house all the windows were double hung. The double glazing did a wonderful job even though there was only about a quarter inch between panes of glass. Ev...

Re: HP printer back to its original problem.

How does that saying go? ... if you keep doing it the same way, you will keep getting the same results. If three HP printers give you the same problem, then the only conclusion you can draw is that there is a design flaw within the printer. It's either that, or you are misapplying the software. I ha...

Re: Rock And Roll

Now you are bringing back some very old memories when you mention replacing screens with storm windows for the winter. Those things were very well built by my grandpa and no doubt would survive any winter storm that dared attack them. They were heavy as all get out, even for a young stud as I was ba...

Re: Paint Remover

I've speculated that you are a pack rat at heart, but a well organized one. Your sense of order creates opportunities for efficient execution of any task you take on. I'd further speculate that you might not actually do more quantitatively, but you do it a hella lot better than the average bear. The...

Re: 14 Year Old Governor

That hand made Cuban cigar I wrote about probably could have been eaten. It was not bitter and was all tobacco. I saw him roll and cut it in front of me. The leaf was tender enough to chew. In fact I recall wondering why it lit up at all. I have to agree with the idea of not relighting a cigar. I ag...

Sunday's forecast is for 40% chance of scattered showers. Nothing unusual happening before or after that. We got more than that from the last hurricane, Gordon.

Re: 14 Year Old Governor

I do know about road apples. Back in the early 50's there were street vendors of all sorts combing the neighborhoods. Most were in trucks and drove up and down the back alleys yodeling or blaring a trumpet to announce their arrival. One such alley merchant came by on a horse drawn wagon. H...

You played polo in St Louis? Maybe I should not be too surprised. Those polo clubs show up in the oddest places. There was one about 3-4 miles from my house up north. Who would have thought? I'm pretty sure I can get anything I want to eat, ethnic or otherwise, in St Louis or Clayton. Chicago has th...

Re: Rock And Roll

You can get 1" red oak for $6.25 a board foot, or white oak for $10.75. Either would make a nice screen door frame. Common pine, however, can be had for $3.20 a board foot. Clear pine is $7.10 a board foot. Soooo, red oak or clear pine for that door would be about $130 for the lumber. Common pine wo...

Re: Rock And Roll

Like a lot of old time goods, I'm thinking the reason the quality has gone to pots ( ) is because it's too expensive to duplicate the old methods. The technology is still around, but the cost of materials and labor would limit the customer base severely. My mom had a set of Revere Copper b...

If your family ran it's own Volksfest, or a form of Oktoberfest, I can see where the popularity comes from. I didn't realize there were German settlements in Missouri. The wiki entry says Hermann is in the middle of the Missouri Rhineland, also a big surprise to me. I figured all you folks were nort...

Re: 14 Year Old Governor

The structure of the tax laws would indeed explain why you can't buy direct. My image of those cigarette smoking GI's has them holding onto a pack of Camels or Lucky Strikes. LOL I do recall the tax stamp. The reason for that has to do with some trivia I picked up along the line. Some television sho...

Re: 14 Year Old Governor

I can't find the reference now, but quite a while ago I read an article about how powerful the tobacco industry has become. The article stated that the reason marijuana was banned is due to the tobacco moguls lobbying against it. Thus the marijuana industry never developed and tobacco filled the vac...

Re: Paint Remover

i've used a few Meerschaum pipes, and a corn cob pipe. They were nowhere near the same thing. It looked as if the corn pipe was made from an actual corn cob. Plus, it didn't last very long. It was fun to use, and reasonably priced. They say meerschaum yields a superior smoke, and that might be true....

Magnalite [cookware] is made from aluminum and a special magnesium alloy which is an excellent heat conductor and reacts well to change in temperature, it is "cast as thick as two silver dollars" and "cooks food from all sides-it's like having an oven on top of your range I can get a 12 piece Magna...

The Teflon ban came into effect about 5 years ago, however Teflon is a brand not a chemical. The offending chemical back then was PFOA (polyfloride ... something, or whatever the hell it was). So, DuPont stopped using that and is now making Teflon with PTFE which is perfectly safe for use in cooking...

Re: Paint Remover

Been here a little over two years now - hard to believe it went by so quickly - and have yet to tour St Louis city. Part of it is that we know there are no-fly zones but don't know where they are. Chicago had the same situation. Unfortunately, my wife has a fear of heights. She closes her eyes when ...

Re: 14 Year Old Governor

Oddly enough Rusty rolled her own too. I don't know if they grow tobacco in England but she would buy from a neighbor who had a friend who ... well, you know. It seemed like a lot of trouble to me because the taxes on tobacco in England are negligible compared to what goes on over here. My guess is ...
