Pain In The Brain

Speaking of brain information ... A professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University writes that the sensation of pain is all in your head. Emotions control the intensity of the pain. Thus the brain constantly monitors a body for sensory inputs regarding pain and it can control the intensity of...

Equation Group Infections

Kaspersky Lab, the well respected Russian based security people, have recently released a report documenting what could be an NSA (Equation Group) developed virus that infects your hard drive. This is not your normal everyday infection. This one replaces the firmware with malicious code that runs at...

Re: Fox Hunt Ban

I fail to see the thrill in any type of hunting. It all involves killing of animals. Back in the days before super markets, perhaps it was a necessary way to sustain life. Now and days it's just entertainment, a sport. Entertainment at the expense of a living creature doesn't seem right to me.

Re: Web Cam Volcano Eruption

Anyone who lives close to an active volcano is asking for trouble. Then again, there apparently are ample opportunities to take some spectacular pictures.

Re: Geoengineering the Weather

The degree of effort required to affect something like a local climate is enormous, even it if can be done. Because so much effort must be put into the process, it is easily detectable. That ease of detection nullifies any military advantage it might offer. I'm not sure why the CIA would have an int...

Re: Ubuntu Gnome 14.10

As the old saying goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Since the old technology suits your needs and the new does not, there is no reason to make any changes. Software developers, however, never stand still. It's always a work in progress.

Re: Web Cam Volcano Eruption

I can see the attraction to monitoring volcanic activity, but I wonder how practical it is. If you see an eruption on web cam, it's already too late. I don't see evacuation of a large population being possible with just a few minutes advance notice.

Ubuntu Gnome 14.10

Having had some exposure to Ubuntu MATE, I was curious to see what Ubuntu Gnome is all about. They both seem to be hell bent on setting back computer environments to the last century, and that made me wonder what is the attraction. So, I downloaded ubuntu-gnome-14.10-desktop-amd64.iso to begin the a...

Re: Expect Changes

Minimalism is the theme de jour. However, as I mentioned elsewhere, we are here to build from scratch. If you have some ideas about what we should build, post them in this Announcement forum.

Geoengineering the Weather

One way to counter the effects of climate change is to apply techniques of geoengineering. In simple terms it means trying to control the weather. Professor Alan Robock, from Rutgers University in New Jersey, is a scientist leading the investigation into the possibilities of controlling weather even...

Expect Changes

As noted in my first announcement, the software here is brand new. There may be a thing or two that I have to learn about before they get implemented. Plus, the look and feel of the index page layout might change dramatically. For the short term don't be surprised if things look different each time ...

Fox Hunt Ban

The traditional Fox Hunting sport has been banned for about a decade. Ten years later there are still 45,000 hunt members who carry on as usual. The Master of Foxhounds Association claims there are 186 hunt packs officially recognized. Apparently there is still a lot of support for the fox hunting a...

Really Realy Smart Phones

We all read about how dangerous our cell phones can be when it comes to eaves dropping. Most of the rumors are true, and it's easier than you would think to spy on people. The apps to do it are already out there for general consumption. Gizmodo lists several of the more popular ones along with warni...

Dream Interpretation

Do you agree with this statement?
Dreaming about a celebrity usually indicates that the dreamer has a personal need for recognition.
