¿Farewell?

Ten days have passed since the previous post to this one on this forum. Even with the announcements about the imminent closure of this virtual place, not much attention has raised regarding it. We occasional visitors here may miss a bit a place where we can express ourselves without censorship, need...

Re: "Yellow!"

Somehow I was expecting a follow up from other people... Too bad it has still not happened. I want to let you an image I got using my still unaluminized main telescope with a solar funnel of today's eclipse. Mind that I hadn't prepared much since I wasn't expecting to see anything due to cloudiness,...

Re: "Yellow!"

¡Amarillo! Whoa. Just came back from reading your recommendation, Dave. Won't give any spoilers, so the rest of people can read it. Since we're trying to let some memories around here given the condition of this forum. I'll take my chances here. Covid thing ruined the last company I was working for,...

Re: They can't put a good man down - but they had a damn good try!

It's weird. We tend to take things for granted, establish routines, do things that we enjoy... Until someday, something happens that changes everything. ¿What's next? we may ask. Is something or someone going to fill the space left, or things just will accommodate by themselves and fill the voids, o...

Having family in the undertaking business gives different perspectives. My uncle Manuel used to say "no single client has come back to comply so far"...

Re: Zenithal Sun.

I tried yesterday, July 26th, as it was the last chance of the second zenithal sun pass of the year. I used a threads ball as a plumb, and a Bahtinov mask as a marker, that I tried to center over the thread suspension point as well as I could. Here is the photo evidence. The length of the cord is ar...

Re: Excess Deaths

I probably could get a 1/64th inch drill bit, but I don't have a chuck that would hold it. LOL I do have a Dremmel tool that might work if I can squeeze the locking mechanism to that small diameter. Even so, I doubt the drill bit would survive the first hole. Even the larger bits tend to break on m...

Re: Zenithal Sun.

I use a very simple method. I hang up a plumb or equivalent at the extreme of a hook or a nail. and an X or arrow shaped trinket at the hanging point (a clothes peg may be enough). The idea is that if there is no gust of wind, the plumb will hang vertically, and the shadow of the marker will cross s...

Re: Zenithal Sun.

Forgot to report, on the second opportunity, last may 18th, it was raining, so no way to try it. Will check again next opportunity on july 24th - 26th.

Besides, the 19.4° North is around downtown, over here, around Km. 23 of the highway to Querétaro, I'm at 19.56° North.

Greetings.

Zenithal Sun.

One aspect of living within the tropics is that one or two tumes yearly, the sun passes through the celestial zenith over any location. Also, given the 0.5 arc degree apparent size of our local star, there's room for "almost zenithal, but not quite so" passes. Today I tried to record the y...

Re: Excess Deaths

Inflation during the Mexican Revolution (1910 - 1930) was a different thing from Inflation during the populistic regimes and the gradual return to sanity after 1970. You may find it curious, but Mexican Monetary law dates from 1931, with modifications to it. We have had no gold or silver standard si...

Re: Major Announcement

When I worked in an assembly line (what we call maquila), we were assembling some "Realtec/Lorain" products under the wing of Marconi conglomerate. Particularly their T9-X and T9-SX lines. Everything had engraved "Made in the USA" on them, yet we were assembling them in a product...

Re: Free Money From Facebook

In the chart above, the unit for inflation measurement is the Mexican Peso, and we also have the published CPI indexes. Originally they were measured by the Bank of Mexico, but now they are measured by the National Statistics, Geography and Informatics Institute (INEGI). Here is the publication of t...

Re: Free Money From Facebook

Partly. During the inflationary period, most syndicate confederations were politically very active negotiating salary increases. In some jobs, salary increases kept pace with inflation, and in others, they were left behind. I the early 80's, minimum wage and contractual salaries were renegotiated at...

Re: Free Money From Facebook

The transition that ocurred when the Bank of Mexico replaced the currency and took away three zeros to it was gradual. Price inflation was stabilizing slowly, so there could be lenghtly campaigns explaining everything. In 1989 inflation was 20%, 1990 26.7%, 1991 22.7%, 1992 15.5%, 1993 9.8%... Start...

Re: Free Money From Facebook

I have to differ a little. Since the full debasing of currency from precious metals, and the extintion of Bretton Woods accord in 1971, Currency value has been determined by a set of factors, among them: - Size of the economy of the country of origin of the currency. - Reliability on the country cen...

Re: Free Money From Facebook

This shows the inflation I've seen and been aware of. 10 years represented by two coins. A 1978 0.720 MXP $100 coin containing 0.64 troy ounces of silver. Roughly USD $4.00 whem emited, and a copper - nickel alloy 1988 MXP $5,000 coin, roughly USD $2.00 when emitted. Even when we didn't get more tha...

Re: Free Money From Facebook

These late three years have been quite bad regarding price inflation. Yet I personally am reluctant to call all of this hyperinflation, since it only has got to the second digit, not a third, like we had down here in the 80's and early 90's. We're not going to discuss on the miriad causes of this in...
