Re: Another Win For Linux

After dial-up I only had DSL up north. That lasted close to a dozen years. The price never changed, but then the service remained the same as well. 7 mbps max. I cannot verify the issue with speed over DSL. I can tell you that I've had at least seven connections to my router on occasion and nobody c...

Re: Is Linux Really Worth it?

Yep, the UEFI Windows key is locked into a partition on that hard drive. However, you only need it to do a secure boot. You can use Windows without a secure boot (a BIOS setting), which is what I'm doing here. If you want Linux to secure boot in UEFI, you will be asked to create a key for Linux akin...

Re: Migration Paths

http://i63.tinypic.com/1269pnm.png I don't know what I was expecting, but that old house is a lot closer to the bank than I had imagined it to be. Aside from keeping the customer conversations out of your front yard, that barrier wall seems pretty useless too. The people I'm hearing would be three ...

Re: Ski By Fire

The ban on forward slashes in file names has to do with the way Windows parses directory paths. Normally the slash means a new directory but I'm pretty sure there is a way to escape the banned characters so that they appear to be what you want. When using the command line, directory names, for examp...

Re: Is Linux Really Worth it?

I got away with ignoring UEFI until I bought this laptop to replace the one that died. Microsoft updates didn't kill it by the way, which is one of the things I suspected happened. There is no way to reset BIOS either so that I'll end up scavengering the chassis and recycling the toxic parts. Stand ...

Re: Another Win For Linux

Since Comcast and Xfinity are using the same parent company infrastructure, the differences in performance must be due to management decisions. My old DSL maxed out at 7 mbps but I never noted any problems. There were times when we had out of town guests and 6-7 connections to the router. Never saw ...

Re: Ski By Fire

Directories can be made hidden. In fact GPT and UEFI depend on that to keep you from altering the bootloader partition. I don't know how long it would have taken me to figure out a drive letter was missing, but it is easy enough to fix once you recognize the problem. The Windows system of attributes...

Re: Migration Paths

One of the more amazing phenomena I discovered here in O'Fallon is the ability of sound to travel well over open ground. They are building a new subdivision about a quarter mile down our street and I can clearly hear individual voices when the rest of the environment is quiet. I'd be able to discern...

Re: Another Win For Linux

They are the same, but different. LOL READ THIS: https://www.cabletv.com/blog/what-is-xfinity-and-difference-from-comcast Apparently Comcast is the parent company which formed Xfinity in an attempt to distinguish itself from the rest of it's holdings. Yeah, that's exactly like Spectrum, the child of...

Re: Is Linux Really Worth it?

Product Key Reader: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html Download that little app and install it on the Windows machine of which you want to recover the product key. I've documented all my OS's with that and it seems to work well, but I've only had occasion to need it once. That'...

Re: Migration Paths

The weather station I have talked about in the past can be calibrated. Not only can the temperature be adjusted but also the rainfall amount. Not sure about the humidity. The problem with doing those adjustments is that I don't have any accurate way to measure the temperature inside the weather stat...

Re: Ski By Fire

There are a ton of programs out there that will convert one graphics format to another. They can do it for .gifs and movies as well. I found a few online but there is "free" software as well. I don't know if they are as good as what you had back in the Win 3.1 days, but I also have a photo editor th...

Re: Is Linux Really Worth it?

The ultimate goal here would be to have the GPT partitioned laptop boot into at least three separate OS's. That's the situation I had on the old machine. I also was able to install OS's onto USB memory sticks and plug them into either of my multiboot machines to boot from them. It wasn't that diffic...

Re: Another Win For Linux

Charter is a mass media company and Spectrum is one of the services they sell. I actually am subscribed to Spectrum but send the monthly checks to Charter. LOL At least that's the way it is broken down where I live. Charter has a lot of services and I suppose they could offer them under their own na...

Re: Ski By Fire

I've got so much overkill built into this Windows 7 desktop that I run everything full throttle. As you point out my high power graphics will often be wasted on a game or image that is no match for my capability. It's really bad on the eyes to see those Comodor graphics in 4k hi res. LOL Well, they ...

It's not so much that we are old. The world around us is moving at a faster pace as we speak. More things are happening per second than has ever happened in the history of humankind. Re: Is Linux Really Worth it?

I've heard that story about the fresh install being an improvement over the upgrade. Never had the opportunity to test that out because all my installs of Windows were fresh. I am getting a new copy of Widows 10 maybe twice a week now by enrolling in their Insider beta testing program. You don't hav...

Re: Another Win For Linux

Charter came highly recommended when we first moved into O'Fallon. Maybe that's because the others (two or three) are even worse. I looked up the customer approval ratings, and sure enough, Charter came in at something like 56%. That was the highest of the bunch. Since I don't give a hoot about the ...

Re: Ski By Fire

One of the things about overclocking is that it supposedly improves the graphics rendering. That's an important attribute to certain gamers. The only game I have that actually takes advantage of what this nVidia card can do looks to be close to photo realistic. It's all in the minute detailing of to...
