Re: Good Vibrations

I don't expect you need to be reminded, but nutrient supplements in the soil is only part of the battle. I found that pH makes a differences as well. I've seen charts that get pretty fine grained about the pH factor and I've always had trouble with it. Not being hydroponic oriented the soil can take...

Re: Al + Hg = Hair

My Gilbert chemistry set and my Erector set were my favorite toys. Lincoln Logs were up near the top as well. While packing things up to move down here we sorted out all the girls' old toys that were in the basement. My mom spoiled the hell out of them and bought everything that was popular at the t...

Re: Good Vibrations

I had a vegetable garden for a hobby at the first house we owned. It was only a couple hundred square feet at the back of the lot, but I grew a lot of different varieties of veggies. Any seed catalog that had something new was a challenge for me to grow. It took several years for me to get...

Re: Good Vibrations

There are folks who try to tell us plants have feelings, or what you and I would call consciousness. Most of the testing I read about was done with a galvanometer. The researchers were able to demonstrate that tomatoes, for example, showed a sharp increase in the reading when stabbed with a knife. T...

Re: It's too quiet in here lately!

Inspectors are always a nuisance. On the other hand it's often what one thinks is inconsequential that can do the most damage. You know, a Zika infected mosquito can find it's way through that pencil sized hole in the screen door without anyone noting it until it's too late. I don't get the idea beh...

Re: Al + Hg = Hair

I think he ended up using HCl (hydrochloric acid) to prep the aluminum. I recall playing with the mercury from thermometers back when I was a kid and the dangers of doing that were unknown. I'd keep a safe distance from it now, although I do eat fish from time to time.

Al + Hg = Hair

I love science. Chemistry always fascinated me, but I never could master it. Too many weird sounding names. However, I did love the lab work and some of the movies we watched. This one is about 8-9 minutes long and shows the interaction between Aluminum and Mercury. I was amazed. https://imgur.com/g...

Kids are experts at brutal honesty. It stops being cute once they turn into adults.

Re: I Blamed It On Putin

Corruption in politics has been around for as long as there have been politicians. Couple that with the power that is obtained with ownership of money, and you have a lot of temptation that is hard to resist. The sad truth is that people expect the powers that be to be corrupt to some degree. It's b...

Re: It's too quiet in here lately!

I think the only accurate barometer is the mercury in a cylinder device. Anything with mechanical moving parts is subject to deterioration over time and nonlinearity. Unless you are in need of critically accurate measurements the not so accurate variety of barometer does a good job. Most people are ...

Re: Good Vibrations

The answer to the gang of conscious lightning bugs question depends on how you define consciousness. It's pretty tricky and many people have been working on the idea for a long time; thousands of years, I would guess. One alternate explanation I read came from a neurological scientist. He claimed co...

Re: I Blamed It On Putin

A republic is a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch. A democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected...

I think the math behind the physics of buoyancy has been around and accepted for eons. The pepper in my Italian dressing isn't the most scientific method of demonstrating the principle, but it is subject to the same laws of gravity as is a Kitty Hawk class aircraft carrier. The mass of the object is...

I do recall your earlier comments which is why I posted this article. It "resonated" with what you said before. I studied astrology and for many years interpreted horoscopes. Nobody really has a good explanation for why it works, when it works, but there seems to be a consensus that vibrat...

Good Vibrations

Not those from the Beachboys, but those in and around our head explain consciousness to certain researchers. I ran across an article that touches on the subject of everything in the universe vibrating, and in some cases synchronously. It's the sync among the vibrations in our head that leads to cons...

Re: It's too quiet in here lately!

The thought experiment of dropping an object into the ocean to see how far it sinks or floats is interesting. My initial thought was that it does one or the other, i.e., sinks all the way every time, or, floats all the time. I came to this conclusion intuitively because I often wondered why the flak...

Re: I Blamed It On Putin

The act of voting by the citizens of a country, state, county, city, village, or any geopolitical entity is about as fundamental to democracy as one can get. Tampering with the votes or repressing voting rights should be akin to something like high treason because it's a direct attack on our system ...

Re: I Blamed It On Putin

I think the whole thing could be simplified by not registering voters ahead of time. On the day of the election bring some proof of residence along with a photo ID and voila! You're in. The thing is that today's facial recognition technology could make voter fraud damned near impossible, but then ha...
