Re: plantain

Until recently we here in what used to be America prohibited drugs that were imported from outside the country. I see where Canada now has permission to send us their drugs - or at least that was the case yesterday. It's a 50/50 chance that the customs people will inspect the contents of a package. ...

I know smokers who do the same thing. They wheeze and cough with emphysema while dangling a cigarette from their lips. I guess we all have a choice about how we want to die. Not that it happens the way we prefer, but still there are choices.

Re: finnish sunset

Those nature scenes truly are amazing. I've seen a few similar right around home. Of course they weren't post processed to bring out the fine details, but still.

I've been to more than my share of plays, shows, and recitals put on by sub-teenie-boppers. A few were to witness their mom's musical achievements as well. Boring isn't the right word, but it does take a long time for ALL those little tykes to perform. Those children which are not amazingly talented...

Re: Microwave x 2

Back at Motorola we had robotic machines to place chip components upon circuit boards before they went to the oven for soldering. Some of those chip parts were barely bigger than a grain of pepper. The placement machines ate about as many of these tiny parts, or misplaced them, as they placed correc...

I doubt the seeds would make it past customs. They have laws against weed over here.

I think there was more tolerance for alcoholics than for drug addicts back at Motorola. Neither was allowed, but you can't tell that some people drink until you see them sober one day.

I never thought about it until I saw the chart and Gary's comment. It does seem kind of redundant.

Re: Microwave x 2

Apparently pure water doesn't have dipoles (if I understand this right). It's the stuff dissolved in the H 2 O that does it: Deionized water (DI water, DIW or de-ionized water), often synonymous with demineralized water / DM water, is water that has had almost all of its mineral ions removed, such a...

WEASEL LIST :xclaim:

It does seem like a wimpy kind of word, but I didn't realize writers had any rules about using it.

Not Very

The word 'very' is pretty much useless according to certain authorities. There are ways to avoid using this adverb, ways I never thought about. Probably because my vocabulary is very lacking. https://writerswrite.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/45_ways_to_avoid_using_the_word_very_writers...

My very first job (before Motorola) was as an "office boy" in an envelope manufacturing company. One of my duties was to calculate the weekly commission totals for each of the sales people. I did that on a Friden. There were a dozen or so people in that office, not counting the sales force...

Re: Microwave x 2

The reason posted this topic is largely due to the fact that I didn't want to research it on my own. I'm past that point now. I didn't apply for a government grant, but, as they say, "Google is your friend." First of all the term "photon" is generic. The photon is a type of elementary part...

Re: 8086 Is 40 Years Old

Your story brings back memories. I'd never make a living developing software alone regardless of the language. I'm simply not that clever. However, I worked in a test lab where we made equipment to test the radios built in the factory. The combination of skills is what made me successful. However, i...

Re: Glass Disks to replace CD, DVD, and USB Sticks

Well, I'm only a part time gamer and don't know a lot about it, but I did do some research before I built my system. There may be people who would argue that liquid cooling (I don't think it's water actually) is mandatory in some circumstances. I've not heard of or read about any such requirement sp...

Re: Microwave x 2

So ... what you are saying is that the entire 1KW of microwaves does not excite each individual blob of mass in the oven. Each item in the oven gets it's proportional share of the source. Never heard of microwaves being called photons. However, the electrons in the mass being heated jump energy leve...

Re: Glass Disks to replace CD, DVD, and USB Sticks

One last question: How safe are water cooled computers? Any fears of them leaking water? Looks like I forgot to give you my considered opinion on this one. The infamous "Silver Yogi" was making too much noise for my sensitive ears - among other things. When I researched replacing it, I looke...
